Before your move-out inspection, reset your room's odor in the right order
You air the room out. You plan to clean. But you still worry that some odor is left, and the inspection day (when the landlord or management company checks the room with you) keeps getting closer. This page lays out the odor care you can do yourself before moving out, in the order that works. We also tell you up front what a deodorizer cannot do.

We start with what a deodorizer cannot do
It would be easy to play on move-out worries and say "this solves everything." We won't. Here is what we can promise.
What it can do
- Neutralize and break down cigarette and everyday odors in the air
- Handle odors that have only recently settled on walls and fixtures
- Improve how the whole room smells, together with wiping
- Treat pet, caregiving and kitchen-waste odors with the same steps
What it cannot do
- Remove yellowing or discoloration of wallpaper (that requires replacing it)
- Promise that your move-out charges will go down
- Remove the source of odors soaked into building materials over many years
- Remove harmful substances such as nicotine or tar
If your lease has a cleaning clause (a term that sets a cleaning fee at move-out), the cleaning fee is charged whether or not there is any odor. Even so, whether you walk into the inspection with odor still in the room is something you can change yourself.
Steps for the day before and the day of moving out (half a day is enough)
With odors, order is everything. First wipe away the sources stuck to surfaces, then use the spray to finish the rest of the space, which you cannot wipe. Do it the other way around and the sources are still there after spraying.
Air out the room and deal with fabricsby the day before
Open the windows to change the air, and wash or move out fabric items such as curtains and rugs first. Fabric is the biggest odor trap.
Wipe downthe day before or the day of
Wipe walls, fixtures, the kitchen area and anything else within reach with a damp cloth. Wiping is the surest way to remove odor sources on surfaces. Please do not skip this step.
Place the can in the center of the room and start itempties in about 4 min
With your belongings already moved out, set the can in the center of the room, press the button down until it clicks, then leave and close the door. One can covers about 13 to 16 m² (8 to 10 tatami mats).
Ventilate and you are doneabout 30 min
It is fine to enter right after spraying (the fine mist may make you cough, but it is not harmful). Open the windows and door to let outside air through. A citrus-like scent from the natural plant extracts remains right after spraying, but it clears quickly with ventilation. No wiping is needed afterward.
Besides moving out, the same steps work for a previous tenant's odor in a room you have just moved into, or for clearing pet and everyday odors before guests arrive.
Wiping only reaches surfaces. Treat the space as a whole.
Wiping removes odor sources only on the surfaces you can reach. For molecules floating in the air, and for places you cannot wipe such as the ceiling, the inside of the air conditioner and gaps along the baseboards, the deodorizing ingredients have to reach them instead.
Prolizer Jet releases its entire contents, which contain 35 natural plant extracts including hinoki (Japanese cypress), throughout the room in about 4 minutes. Instead of covering odors with fragrance like an air freshener, it reacts with odor molecules to neutralize and break them down. It contains no synthetic fragrance.
| Target substance | Typical odor | Odor reduction rate |
|---|---|---|
| Ammonia | Sweat, body odor, pet toilets, excrement | 89% |
| Hydrogen sulfide | Rotting, sewer odor | 91% |
| Trimethylamine | Kitchen waste, raw fish | 79% |
| Formaldehyde | Building materials, new-house smell | 83.7% |
* Figures are based on test data from independent testing laboratories such as the Kitasato Research Center for Environmental Science and Japan Food Research Laboratories. All were measured under specific test conditions and do not guarantee results in an actual room. How much difference you notice depends on the size and shape of the space and how strong the odor is.
Where we draw the line on cigarette odor
We can help with cigarette odor that has settled recently. However, tar-based odor that has soaked deep into building materials after years of smoking cannot be removed by this product, because the source remains inside. The fix at that level is replacing the wallpaper.
Answers to the four most common concerns
Will it set off the smoke detector?
You do not need to cover the smoke detector. There have been no cases of alarms going off at the facilities we supply, but place the can where the mist will not hit a detector directly.
Do I need to clean up afterward?
No. Unlike smoke-type insecticide foggers (bug bombs), it is designed not to leave its ingredients in the room, so no wiping is needed after use. The facilities we supply do not wipe down afterward either.
Should I move bedding and dishes?
It does not affect bedding. Covering food and dishes is not required either, but move anything that goes in your mouth if you are concerned.
Please be careful with fire
The propellant is a high-pressure gas (DME, flammable). Do not use it near open flames or store it anywhere that can reach 40°C or higher. Always leave the room while it is spraying.
Do not spray directly at people or pets. This product is a general household good, not a pharmaceutical or quasi-drug (a Japanese regulatory category). Regarding safety, the main ingredient, the plant-based deodorizing liquid PCK, showed no abnormalities in an acute inhalation toxicity test by the Tokyo Food Sanitation Association (東京都食衛生協会) (based on materials provided by the manufacturer).
